Long Writes is a structured Writing Legends module for Years 3 to 6 that guides students through the complete process of crafting extended persuasive texts. Designed to make extended writing feel manageable rather than overwhelming, it breaks the task into clear, scaffolded steps so students build confidence and skill at every stage.

Who is Long Writes for?

Long Writes is available for students in Years 3 to 6. It is particularly effective in Years 5 and 6, where developing writing stamina, structure and clarity becomes increasingly important.

How does Long Writes work?

Long Writes follows the familiar "I Do – We Do – You Do" instructional model, making it easy to embed into existing teaching routines without introducing a new framework.

Students move through the process step by step:

  1. Choose a topic – Students select a persuasive writing topic to focus on.
  2. Set a word-count goal – Students choose a target of between 150 and 800 words.
  3. Build an outline – Students plan the structure of their piece before writing.
  4. Craft a thesis – Students develop a clear central argument.
  5. Write body paragraphs – Students use the PEEL structure (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) to build well-reasoned paragraphs.
  6. Write a conclusion – Students bring their argument to a clear and purposeful close.

Each step is scaffolded with modelling, vocabulary support and Instant Legend Feedback.

What do students produce?

By the end of a Long Writes session, students have created multiple structured paragraphs built around clear persuasive arguments. The process encourages purposeful revision along the way, so the final piece is polished and written with confidence.

What support is built in for students?

Every step includes modelling so students can see how strong writing is constructed before attempting it themselves. Vocabulary support helps students find the right words to express their ideas, while Instant Legend Feedback keeps them on track and helps them improve as they write.
